in your Portland job search, check out www.idealist.org . They have various joblistings for people who are set out to save the world. My oldest brother got a job there working for www.globalgiving.org making the website that they run. He loves it, and is doing his part to save the world. It may be a complete dead-end, but the site reminds me of LeaderShape, so I thought I'd share it :-)
