Favorite Leadership Quotes

So in my unemployed spared time I was thinking of my favorite leadership quotes. I keep a list of them in the back of my planner and read them whenever I need a little inspiration (like when writing cover letters!). My list needs updating and I'm curious to know what your favorites are?! Here are some of mine, but please post some of your favorites too!

"When you cease to make a contribution, you being to die." Eleanor Roosevelt

"We have to earn our wings everyday." Frank Borman

"To whom much is given, much is expected."

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Nobody got anywhere in the world by simply being content." Louis L'Amour

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Eleanor Roosevelt

"So the point is not to become a leader. The point is to become yourself completely- all your skills, gifts, and energies- in order to make your vision manifest. You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be and enjoy the process of becoming." Warren Bennis

"You win with people first." Woody Hayes

and of course "Live with a healthy disregard for the impossible!" LeaderShape

LS 2008 is moving!

Check out this message from Jen about LS 2008. Also, I think you all should consider applying for On-site Coordinator and the Marketing/Selections positions. Also, there is a steering committee. If anyone is on the steering committee you should post the upcoming meeting dates on the blog.
******************************************
The dates for LS 2008 will be Saturday, September 13 through Thursday, September 18. This also means that we will be changing location from OSU-Newark to Salt Fork Resort/Conference Center.

The major reason for the change is to help next year’s participants stay connected immediately after LeaderShape is finished. You all have such great energy and passion at the end of Day 6, but then you leave for the summer and may lose some of your momentum. By moving the Institute to September, we’re hoping to tap into that energy and passion right as classes begin in the fall, and to help you stay connected to your vision, your family cluster, and all the other things you took away from LeaderShape.

Because of this date change, I want to re-open the application for Marketing/Selections and On-Site Coordinator. We have received some outstanding applications already, but if you were unable to participate on the steering committee due to the June dates, but are now available for the September dates, please consider applying. The application is due Sept. 7 and you can get one my emailing Jen.

The time commitment for Marketing/Selections will be similar to before, roughly September through May. The time commitment for On-Site Coordinators will be extended from September 2007 through September 2008. The busier times will be in winter and spring quarters, while fall will be much less time-intensive and focused mostly on preparation for winter quarter selections.

Please let me know what questions you have about any of this. I am happy to chat about our new dates, responsibilities of the steering committee roles, or anything else that’s on your mind.

Thanks!

A Wish For Leaders

Ok, this poem was given to me by my Hall Director when I was an RA. I read it anytime I am feeling especially pleased with myself.

A Wish For Leaders

I sincerely wish you will have the experience of thinking up a new idea, planning it, organizing it, and following it to completion, and then have it be magnificently successful. I hope you'll go through the same process and have some "bomb out."

I wish you could know how it feels to "run" with all your heart and lose...horribly!

I wish that you could achieve some great good for humankind, but have nobody know about it except you.

I wish you could find something so worthwhile that you deem it worthy of investing your life within it.

I hope you become frustrated and challenged enough to push back the barriers of your own personal limitation.

I hope you make stupid mistakes and get caught red-handed and are big enough to say those magic words: "I was wrong."

I hope you give so much of yourself that some days you wonder if it's worth all the effort.

I wish for you a magnificent obsession that will give you reason for living and purpose and direction and life.

I wish for you the worst kind of criticism for everything you do, because that makes you fight to achieve beyond what you normally would.

I wish for you the experience of leadership.

Creepy Chess

Those statues on the Newark campus were creepy! Here are a few pics of us embracing the creepiness!

Nate vs the statue, while Jimmy plays coach. I think I heard Jimmy telling the statue to "just loosen up!"

That statue was such a chess rockstar that he took on both Ravi and Jimmy! Looks like our guys are winning.

I think this was supposed to be our serious picture. Clearly following directions was not a strength of OH Snap! Although, some of us do look quite scholarly.

OH Snap! and the Dancing Animals

So some thing got into us after the LeaderShape Review and the end result was a whole lotta inappropriateness with the big dancing animals. Proceed with caution...

Ok, this may be the cutest picture of Meredith ever. Things were still wholesome at this point.

Then Jimmy made friends with the elephant.

Courtney took it to the next level with a little smooch on the turtle (not an awkward turtle...yet).

Then, suddenly the giraffe wasn't so innocent...and neither was Megan for that matter!!

And some times I have nightmares about what's happening here! Seriously.

Hey, remember when Ellen figured out how to make the timer on her camera work? And then she hobbled over as fast as she could. Yeah, that was cool.

You'll be happy to know her foot injury is (almost) entirely healed and she is back to doing things outside that can cause bodily harm.

What are we all looking at? Clearly whatever it is it really excites Shreya. And gives Ravi a belly ache. And makes Nate confused.

Awwww! Jimmy, Shreya, Lea, Meredith, Ashley, Megan, Courtney, Nate, Ravi, and Beth

Awkward Turtle!

Cluster Facilitators

Did you ever think during LeaderShape "geeze, the Cluster Facilitators at this thing sure are crazy?" I know I did! Here are a few pictures to confirm your suspicions!

Lanton and Kathy leading our super secretive faculty meetings. Notice the obscene amount of junk food!! Why do you think we were happy all the time? Chocolate. Lots of it!

Chris and Mike playing online or working on uploading pictures for the slide show.

My Vision

To live in a country in which all public schools are funded proportionally by the federal government, ensuring they all have equal access to the resources needed to enable them to obtain the best education available with qualified teachers, all necessary technology, and without the threat of losing academic/extra-curricular/music program, etc. due to financial deficit.

Stater Pictures!

Aren't Staters just the cutest? (Courtney Banks stop rolling your eyes!!) Well we ragged on SAC a lot but truth-be-told both organizations do many great things for the University. For those of you in Oh Snap! that aren't in either group, you should check them out!

Vision Work

These are pictures of everyone working on their visions. Hey, you all should post your visions on the blog so that we can all remember them? What do you say?!

Look we did it!!

Nate, Ravi, and Mike sharing ideas.

They look awfully hard at work.

Jai and Jaimie are really thinking about their stretch goals.

Vicky takes a break from visioning to write a note or two.

Awww, wasn't Ryan a good facilitator?

Looks like Nate and Ravi are really excited about their visions!! I bet they are just deep in thought.

Beth and Lea finally get to chat about their visions, which have very similar goals! I hope you ladies start your own non-profit together!!
